About the project

Bhawani Higher Secondary School.

We are excited to announce our first school projects for 2019 in Bhawani Higher Secondary School!

In the Himalayan foothills of Nuwakot district is beautiful Kakani village. Located 1.5hrs drive north of Kathmandu city this community is blessed with incredible vistas of Ganesh Himal and the Manaslu mountain range.

On October 28th 2018, Hearts members Dan, Kelsey, Rajan, and his wife Anslu travelled by jeep to visit the Bhawani Higher Secondary School est: 1959. Active Hearts is blessed to have so many dedicated Nepalese working on the front line of our projects to ensure all cultural, social, economic, and logistical considerations are taken into account. This is where the extremely connected Rajan Simkhada comes into play.

As well as being a great friend and an Active Hearts board of trustee’s member, he is also a successful businessman and entrepreneur. Rajan uses his reach to inspire the youth to pursue education and their passions within Nepal. Unfortunately, many of the young educated Nepalese are simply waiting for a chance to leave the country and find a job elsewhere. Rajan, among many things, is an actor in a famous comedy sitcom called ‘Breakfail’ and much to the children’s delight he treated them to some of his characters lines during the visit. It was Rajan’s connections to the area that brought us here as he knows the people, the community, and their struggles.

The principal Mr. Shankar Prasad Lohani took us for a tour of the school which was badly damaged during the 2015 earthquakes. Of the 26 classrooms, 16 were damaged as well as the ablutions block.

As is common in Nepal, the student to teacher ratio is very high. There are 765 pupils and 21 teachers. Of the 21 teachers, 15 teachers are employed by the government meaning they are provided approx. 1 teacher per 50 students. The salaries of the six other teachers are supported by the Village Development Committee Fund (VDC) which is difficult but necessary. The school also has 3 support staff for admin etc.

What can we do?

IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE:

-Mr. Shankar explained that the funding for the current classrooms did not include money to install doors and windows. During the winter months (Dec-Mar) there can be a bitter cold wind blowing through the school grounds and many children end up sick and struggle to attend their lessons.

The cost to install 5 doors and 30 windows is $3500 USD

-A much needed paint job would transform the school into a vibrant bright place of learning as it is currently old and dull. We would provide the materials, employ local skilled and unskilled labour to brighten up the school and create colourful and fun murals of learning for the students to enjoy.

Painting the school $4500 USD

-The school also desperately needs a compound wall completed to protect the school grounds from roaming buffalo, goats, cows, and unwanted visitors as the local access trail runs next to the school. The wall would be 550ft long and 6ft high.

Compound wall $4500 USD

-The current library is missing much needed books for the children to use to enhance their studies. A lack of seating also means the children are resigned to the floor.

Books $2000 USD Chairs x 30 $500 USD

After a tour of the school and spending time with the children in the classrooms it became obvious Active Hearts should do what we can to assist. As we raise the required money for the projects for Bhawani Higher Secondary School we will endeavour to complete the above in order of importance.

Total amount $15,000 USD

Please consider donating to help Active Hearts transform this wonderful school into an exciting, bright, and safe place of learning for the children of Kakani.

Thank you and Namaste x
