Fundraised to date$0 $5000
These two legends trained, fund-raised and ran on behalf of the Active Hearts Foundation May 29th 2018! The race is run from Everest base camp to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital, on the 29th of May each year. This is the anniversary day of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norqay's first summit of Mt Everest in 1953. Out of 133 entrants Mel finished 46th in 8:22.07 (2nd from NZ) and Elder 34th in 7:34.29 (1st from Peru) respectfully.
Literally a marathon effort we salute you two!!
The Everest Marathon is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest marathon in the world and the course is 42 km (26.2 miles) over rough mountain trails.
Heres a message from Mel before the race:
Namaste! I'm Mel, I grew up in NZ and spent lots of time in the outdoors which lead me to guiding for Active Adventures firstly in NZ and then Nepal. It's now been 6 years with Active and over 3 years working in Nepal. Nepal is an incredible country with amazing people, many of whom are my family away from home. I first got involved with Active Hearts during the devastating earthquakes of 2015. As there were no more trips I was able to put my time towards helping those in need with Active Hearts. Since then I have been helping out where I can and have had the chance to attend three of the Active Hearts library openings, all very special occasions. Now I would like to give back to Nepal so in May I will run the Tengzing Hillary marathon: 42 km starting at Everest Base Camp at 5364m and finishing in Namche bazaar 3700m (I wish it was all down hill!) If anybody would like to support Nepal through the Active Hearts Foundation and my crazy race, any donations would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully through this challenge of completing my very first marathon I can raise funds for future Active Hearts projects!!
A message from Elder pre race day:
I’m Elder originally from Peru. I started guiding in the jungle in Peru where I grew up so you can call me Jungle Boy. Now I live in New Zealand and I’ve been guiding here and in Nepal the last few years, showing people awesome places around the world and working with Active Adventures for the last 7 years, Wahooo time flies when you’re having fun!! When I moved to NZ I met an awesome Kiwi called Dan (DK) who was doing some awesome work in Nepal and had created an incredible charity to help out local communities. I got really interested in this project and the amount of work DK does there is just fantastic and I thought to myself, I really want to be part of such a rewarding challenge and make people happy. I’m running the Everest marathon to raise money for the charity and help my friend bring smiles and satisfaction around the remote villages in Nepal. Namaste DK for letting me be part of this awesome dream. Nepal has given me a lot and taught me a lot so now it’s time to give back and say Namaste Nepal! Now, time to kick my training up a gear!!
Our good friends at Invercargill Shoe Cinic have jumped on board and we sent a number of running shoes to give to local Sherpa running the marathon. Thank you to Ben and the team and we look forward to working with you in the future!! Check them out SHOE CLINIC INVERCARGILL
Once again congratulations Mel and Elder on your awesome efforts and THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all those that kindly donated to this cause. Isn't the planet filled with incredible people?!
